History
The idea of starting a children’s home was birthed in February 2006 when current Director, Stephen Gachengo, conducted a funeral in Nyeri, Central Kenya. The service was for a mother of 3 children whose father had also passed away 2 years before, both as a result of AIDS. There was much sorrow as there was no one to take care of the children. As a result of seeing this need firsthand, Stephen had a vision to start an orphanage.
The orphanage began in a rural village named Mwiki, in the outskirts of Nairobi. An 18 room home was rented and in May 2006, the orphanage was started with 15 children. As the orphanage grew and children were added, a need arose for a larger space. In 2008 building started to take place for the current facility and in September of 2010 the doors of Morningstar Children’s Home were opened!
